Reading the Summer Friday: when to leave Manhattan for the East End

The single variable that decides every eastbound passage from June to September is the Friday-afternoon wall on NY-27. Here is how to plan around it.

Every passage in this almanac is really two passages: the one that runs on a quiet Tuesday and the one that runs on a summer Friday. The difference is not small. West of the Shinnecock Canal, NY-27 collapses to a single eastbound artery, and from roughly 1 PM to 8 PM on a July or August Friday that artery can add an hour or two to any road-bound trip.

The window that matters

The reliable escape windows from Manhattan are before noon and after 8 PM. A black car or a rental that clears the Long Island Expressway before the lunch hour generally reaches Southampton in a little over two hours; the same car leaving at 3 PM can take closer to four. The Cannonball — the reserved-seat LIRR express — exists precisely to step around this, which is why its summer-Friday seats sell out first.

What each passage does on a bad Friday

  • Black car and self-drive absorb the full traffic penalty, but the black car at least lets you work or sleep through it.
  • The LIRR is insulated from the road on its own right-of-way; the Cannonball is the cleanest road-free option to the Hamptons.
  • The Jitney rides the same NY-27 as the cars and takes the same hit, with the consolation of a seat you didn’t have to steer.
  • Helicopter and seaplane skip the ground entirely — on the worst Fridays the forty-minute flight is not a luxury so much as the only way to keep an evening reservation.

A simple rule

If you must leave Manhattan between 1 and 7 PM on a summer Friday and you have a fixed arrival time, fly or take the train. If your timing is loose, drive — but drive early. The road will forgive a 10 AM departure and punish a 4 PM one.

Frequently asked questions

When is the worst eastbound traffic? Summer Fridays, roughly 1–8 PM, with the chokepoint at the Shinnecock Canal in Hampton Bays.

Does the train avoid the traffic? Yes. The LIRR runs on its own track; the seasonal Cannonball runs express from the city to the Hamptons with no road exposure.

What is the safest passage for a fixed dinner reservation? The Cannonball or a scheduled flight — both are insulated from the NY-27 backup that derails road trips.
